Unfortunately, the season of colds and viruses is upon us. Here are a few tips to get you and your child through it. Please discuss these with your children so that they can practice these methods in school as well:

  • Wash hands with soap and water both before and after eating a meal or snack
  • Wash hands after coughing or sneezing
  • Encourage sneezing into your elbow as opposed to into your hands
  • Apply chapstick morning and night to reduce chapped lips. If your child is prone to chapped lips, send them to school with Chapstick to avoid trips to the office
  • Stay well hydrated – it keeps your skin and lips from chapping, as well as aids in clearing mucus and headaches
  • If you are prone to nosebleeds, apply polysporin or a lubricant inside nostrils twice a day
  • During a cold and congestion, avoid dairy and sugar – they thicken and breed more mucus production

If your child is visibly sick, please keep them at home until they are well enough to join their classmates. We do not want to spread germs around the school, and we do not want them struggling to concentrate in class if they are not well. Remember that a child must be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication before they are allowed back at school.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at jrodgers@solomonschechter.ca
