Grade 4 students were joined by their parents as they showcased their Language Arts skills at their “Mission Possible” themed Happening!
The focus of the Happening was the writing process. Their mission today is to write a “juicy paragraph”. They began by learning that the format of a paragraph can be likened to a hamburger. The top part and the bottom part of the bun hold the hamburger together, just as the topic sentence and closing sentence do for a paragraph. The topic sentence explains the subject and the focus – the “who” or “what” the paragraph is about. The closing sentence sums up what was explained in the paragraph and leaves the reader satisfied. The juicy meat, the lettuce, the tomato and the other fixings of the burger correspond to the supporting details and the elaborations. They provide the substance and tell the reader all the information needed to understand the central idea of the paragraph.
