Our Administration is made up of a team of professionals, most of whom have served the school and the community for over 25 years and are part and parcel of the rich history of the Academy in Montreal.

Steven Erdelyi

Head of School

Steven Erdelyi began as Head of School of Solomon Schechter Academy after serving as Principal of the Academy. Before joining SSA, he served as Principal of Hampstead School and Vice-Principal of Westmount High School. Previously, he was the head of the Science Department at Marymount Academy where he taught Math and Science. He has also taught English as a Second Language in Japan. Mr. Erdelyi is a graduate of McGill University with a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and Queen’s University with a B.Ed. He also completed a post-graduate degree in Educational Leadership at McGill University.

Jonathan Kuczer

Assistant Head of School

Jonathan Kuczer has an extensive background in the Montreal Jewish community. He taught mathematics at Bialik High School. He also worked for many years as a Program Director at the Y Country Camp gaining insight to both managing facilities and working with staff. In addition to his experience in the community, Jonathan has an undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems as well as an MBA in Strategic Management. Through his studies he has had the opportunity to work on various consulting projects including those of non-profit organizations throughout Montreal.

Julie Schneider

Assistant Head of School

Julie Schneider is our Assistant Head of School – Communications, Enrollment & Student Life. In this role, she works closely with our Head of School and Assistant Head of School – Finance, Operations & Fundraising, as well as oversees the Director of Communications, Director of Student Services, Lunchtime and Recess Coordinator, and Head Coach. Prior to joining Solomon Schechter Academy, Julie was Executive Director of Community Relations at Miss Edgar’s and Miss Cramp’s School and before that, Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications at Federation CJA. She holds an MBA from HEC Montréal and a BA in Sociology and Jewish Studies from McGill University.

Chani Cohen

Director of Judaic Studies

Chani Cohen is our Director of Judaic Studies and our Bnot Sherut program at the Academy. She has been with the Academy since 1992. Chani holds a B.A. from the Open University in Israel and a Master of Science degree from the Azrieli School of Education and Administration of Yeshiva University. Bnot Sherut are Israeli female high school graduates who choose community service in lieu of their military service. In the past decade, the State of Israel has sent some of these young women to do community service in schools abroad. Solomon Schechter Academy has two Bnot Sherut among its school staff.

Judith Dahan

Director of French Studies

Judith Dahan is the Director of French Studies. She holds a Baccalauréat en sciences de l’éducation from University of Montreal and completed a Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from McGill University. She began her career at Solomon Schechter Academy in September 1998 as a French and math teacher in the Section française. Before her appointment of Director of French Studies, Judith was most recently the Math Coordinator from 2011-2015.

Alexandra D’Arrisso

Director of Student Services

Alexandra D’Arrisso has been part of the Student Services team at Solomon Schechter Academy since 2014. In her role as Director, she works with students, parents, and teachers to ensure that every child has the opportunity and support to reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally. Alexandra is presently completing her Doctorate at McGill University, where she also earned a Master’s degree in School and Applied Child Psychology. Prior to working at SSA, she held internships at the Lester B. Pearson School Board and the Child Psychiatry Day Treatment Program at the Jewish General Hospital.

Anthony Davis

Director of Communications

Anthony Davis is the Director of Communications at Solomon Schechter Academy. Anthony is a former student of Solomon Schechter Academy and is now proudly working with many of the teachers who helped him become the professional he is today. A graduate of Concordia University, Anthony gained much of his experience creating and managing multimedia content for a local Jewish summer camp and various educational internships. Anthony is responsible for all external and internal communications. Anthony manages all marketing and PR communication deliverables that include the website, weekly newsletter and all e-mail communications, photography & videography, graphic design, social media, media relations and print materials.

Darra Lang

Director of the English Department

Darra Lang is the Director of English Studies. She began working at Solomon Schechter Academy in 1990 as a teacher’s assistant. She has taught math and English Language Arts in cycles one and two and was the Coordinator of Student Services for several years. Darra is a graduate of McGill University where she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, a Diploma in Education and a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology.

Randy Mendel

Director of Early Childhood Education

Randy Bass Mendel is the Director of our Early Childhood Department. Randy is a graduate of McGill University where she received her undergraduate degree in Education and a certificate in Educational Leadership at McGill. She began her career at Solomon Schechter Academy, first as a student teacher, then as assistant, and subsequently as an English teacher for kindergarten, grade one, and grade three. After starting her family, she began teaching PreK at the Snowdon Y. Over the last 8 years Randy has been our Director of Early Childhood for the children in Jr. PreK, PreK and Kindergarten. Her approach to Early Childhood Education is well respected throughout our community by parents and professionals alike.
